Our Top 5 Tips for Mastering Canva Design for Your Business

We create a lot of content. A lot. Not only for our own business, but for our clients and courses. And although we love Adobe InDesign for large branding projects, we actually use Canva for 99% of the designs we create - including every single one of our social media posts.

We kind of feel like were confessing some dirty secret by saying this, but you can actually create almost everything you need for your business in Canva - and that’s really good news because Canva is a lot simpler to use than most other design programs.

Mastering Canva is not only a major resume booster, but it can help you big time when you need to create designs for your own business. You can also monetize your designs by creating templates for purchase on Etsy and Creative Market (major win).

We’ve used Canva since the beginning and here are our top 5 tips:

1.Set up your brand kit! Make sure you set your brand color palette and brand typefaces in your Canva Brand Kit to make the design process even quicker. If your brand typefaces aren’t offered by Canva, you can upload them!

2. Use templates to keep a cohesive feel. Whether you are creating your social media story templates or a template for your email newsletter, having a design you can re-use will give you a stronger brand presence and make your life easier. #winwin

3. If you’re using a pre-made template or a purchased template, keep the spacing and layout the same to keep the design’s integrity, but make sure to change the typefaces/colors to match your brand.

4. Avoid editing photos using Canva. Canva is a design tool, and it definitely lacks in the photo editing capabilities. We recommend using Lightroom or Photoshop to edit your photos before uploading them into Canva.

5. Stay organized! Canva makes it incredibly easy to organize your designs + uploads into folders. It may not seem like a huge deal, but a few years into your business and you’ll have hundreds of designs and even more uploads so having a system to organize it all will make your life so much easier.
